The Flower – The Socio-Economic Effects Of Marijuana Prohibition

August 14, 2010:  isnichwahr.de / YouTube – July 27, 2010

The Flower contrasts a utopian society that freely farms and consumes a pleasure giving flower with a society where the same flower is illegal and its consumption is prohibited. The animation is a meditation on the social and economic costs of marijuana prohibition…

The Flower

The Tonka Report Editor’s Note: A must see video! This is a brilliant animated synopsis concerning this controversial issue. Whether you agree with the legalization of marijuana or not, the simple fact is that the socio-economic costs of marijuana prohibition far outweigh the alternative in every aspect…  – SJH

  1. I think there is indeed a difference between legalization and decriminalization. I have never used (and never plan to use) marijuana in any way, but I would prefer decriminalization rather than legalization, which is, in essence, a form of regulation, –regulation that will lead to negative consequences down the road.

I would prefer a “do what you like, but you will be responsible for any damages caused” attitude, rather than a, “this is how it should happen and we must tax this substance” policy.

As soon as it is legalized, it will become like the cigarette industry, which effectively means ‘taking marijuana away from the people and giving it to monopoly industries’.

So while this video is good and illustrates how prohibition is a failure it provides a horrible solution.

    • I must also add that legalization with the taxes added on to the sale of the plant as well as the regulations mandated that people selling it legally must follow, will cause the prices of marijuana to go up.

Where if they decriminalized it, and anybody could grow it, the prices would fall, and it would be hard for monopolies to take it over.

Anyways, good video, but legalization will bring more harm then good.

  2. Penultima,

Well said. I agree with all your points, and will add that it would only be a matter of time, if officially legalized, before the monopolies (trans-national corporations) poisoned the marijuana, and thus the consumer, with slow kill cancerous chemicals (additives) as they did in the tobacco industry with cigarettes…
