Tropical Storm Brewing In Caribbean Sea And Forecast To Hit Gulf
June 26, 2010: Doyle Rice / USA TODAY – June 25, 2010
The first tropical depression of the 2010 Atlantic hurricane season has formed in the Western Caribbean, according to the National Hurricane Center. The center says that “the depression is very close to tropical storm strength… and conditions appear favorable for some intensification before it reaches the Yucatan Peninsula in a day or so.” As of 6:00 p.m. ET, the depression was located about 355 miles southeast of Cozumel, Mexico, and has maximum sustained winds of 35 mph. The system is heading to the west-northwest at 10 mph.
A tropical storm warning is in effect for the east coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. The peninsula separates the Caribbean Sea from the Gulf of Mexico. The warning is in effect in Mexico from Chetumal north to Cancun. The forecast is for the storm to enter the Gulf of Mexico by early Monday morning. It is unclear if it will pass over the massive oil spill in the Gulf, currently estimated at somewhere between 69 million and 132 million gallons in the water.
