NCAR Study States BP Oil ‘Spill’ Likely To Travel Up Atlantic Coast

June 3, 2010: Raymond Gellner / World News Examiner – June 3, 2010

Boulder, Colorado – A study released on Thursday and based upon computer simulations for Gulf and Atlantic Ocean currents has determined that oil from the BP oil spill may soon be carried around Florida and up the Atlantic Coast to Cape Hatteras, NC, then out into central and north Atlantic.

The study was completed by National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), and was sponsored by the National Science Foundation. The National Center for Atmospheric Research is managed by The University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR).

According to the report, the simulation is based upon standard models for the currents and weather in the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean for the respective time of year. In total there were six computer models generated, all of which show oil entering the Atlantic and into the Gulf Stream at various time frames. Although the spread of the oil is slow in the beginning, once the oil reaches well into the loop current, the speed of the oil reaches about 40 miles per day. When the oil reaches the Atlantic it greatly speeds up to about 100 miles per day.

A member of the study team, NCAR scientist Synte Peacock said, “I’ve had a lot of people ask me, ‘Will the oil reach Florida?’ Actually, our best knowledge says the scope of this environmental disaster is likely to reach far beyond Florida, with impacts that have yet to be understood.”

The NCAR report states, “The computer simulations indicate that, once the oil in the uppermost ocean has become entrained in the Gulf of Mexico’s fast-moving Loop Current, it is likely to reach Florida’s Atlantic coast within weeks. It can then move north as far as about Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, with the Gulf Stream, before turning east. Whether the oil will be a thin film on the surface or mostly subsurface due to mixing in the uppermost region of the ocean is not known.”

This report does state that this is not a forecast, but rather “it illustrates a likely dispersal pathway of the oil for roughly four months following the spill.”

BP is making another attempt at containment of at least some of the oil, though it states that a permanent fix will only come after a relief well is completed. This well has been gushing oil uncontrollably since the Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion and sinking in April, and as much as 95,000 barrels of oil and methane may be gushing from the well each day.

The Department of Justice is conducting a criminal investigation into the incident, and President Obama has banned deepwater offshore drilling until a commission study is completed in approximately six months.

World Wide Demonstrations Follow Israeli Assault On Gaza Flotilla

with 2 comments

June 3, 2010: Herb Boyd /Amsterdam News via New America Media – June 3, 2010

“Free Palestine, Free Palestine!” was the chant that echoed on the crowded streets outside the offices of the New York City Council Tuesday afternoon.

Charles Barron was the only council member among those protesters outraged by the attack of Israeli Navy commandos Monday on a humanitarian flotilla bound for Gaza.

“We denounce this act of piracy,” Barron charged. “This was clearly a state sponsored act of terrorism by the Israeli government, which has left nine innocent human rights activists dead.” The attack on the flotilla’s lead ship, Mavi Marmara, containing 10,000 tons of humanitarian aid for the beleaguered people of Gaza, was surrounded by Israeli gunboats in international waters and then encircled by helicopters that hovered while commandoes descended upon the ship on ropes.

“They were in international waters,” Barron continued, “and if they were Somalis protecting their maritime waters from pollution, they would be considered pirates. So, Israel should be denounced for this piracy in international waters.”

According to reports from the Israeli government, the commandos intercepted the ships before they entered their waters and threatened to violate the blockade and economic embargo that has been in place since 2007, when the Hamas government was voted into office. President Barack Obama, after hours of silence, said he “deeply regretted” what had happened and announced that an investigation would be launched.

Meanwhile, protest demonstrations occurred all over the world, and nowhere more aggressive than in Turkey. Many of the human rights activists on board the ship—and at least four of those reported killed—were Turks. More than 10,000 people in Istanbul marched on the Israeli consulate, waving banners and shouting “Killer Israel.” Bulent Arinc, Turkey’s prime minister, said there were up to 400 Turks among those on board the Mavi Marmara, the Turkish cruise vessel leading the Freedom Flotilla.

The UN called for an end to the counterproductive and unacceptable blockade of Gaza. “We wish to make clear that such tragedies are entirely avoidable if Israel heeds the repeated calls of the international community to end its counterproductive and unacceptable blockade of Gaza,” said a joint statement from Robert Serry, UN special coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, and Filippo Grandi, commissioner of the UN Relief and Works Agency.

Councilman Barron, who traveled to Gaza last year and experienced similar intransigence by the Israelis to allow them to deliver food and medical supplies, said, “I’ve seen the destruction of Gaza. And what it amounts to is the systematic denial of the Palestinians’ human rights, their inability to have food, water and medical supplies. It’s a clear case of genocide.”

“Wake up, Israel,” screamed an impassioned Emad, a Palestinian activist who has also traveled to Gaza. “This is not about Muslim versus Jew. One of those on the ship was a Holocaust survivor, so wake up Israel.” He noted that the U.S. annually supplied the Israeli government with $20 billion for its military. “American taxpayers’ money is funding commandos who kill innocent people,” he lamented.

Bill Doares of Al-Awda, the Palestine Right to Return Coalition; Palestinian artist and activist Samia Halaby; and Colette Pean of the International Association Against Torture were equally outspoken and disturbed by the Israeli aggression, which they agreed was “excessively brutal, illegal and immoral.” It is still not clear what provoked the violence, and watching film footage of the Israeli raid is inconclusive since it was supplied by the Israeli Defense Forces.

Thus far, Edward Peck, a former U.S. ambassador who was on the ship, is the only eyewitness to come forth to explain what happened. Peck, 80, said he was aroused at 4 a.m. in the morning. Suddenly, there were Israeli commandos on board the ship staring at him. “We were in international waters when they came aboard our ship,” he explained.

“I jumped out of bed fully clothed because there are no facilities on the ship. No shower, no wash, no nothing and went upstairs. There I encountered a group of Israeli commandos who said, ‘Sit down,’” Peck recounted on ABC-TV. “They were by that time in control of the ship and fine. You know, they didn’t harm anybody after that. They harmed some folks in getting on board, as people tried to block them from taking over.”

Peck, who is known for his opposition to the Bush administration and its wars in the Middle East, was told by his captors that he had violated Israeli law. “Which one?” he asked. “They said I had entered Israel illegally. But if I’m brought into the country under armed escort, that is not entering the country illegally. Well, they didn’t agree with that. I was deported, so I suppose that goes on my record.”

But at least he’s alive and back with his family. It was reported that the government had released others and delivered the supplies to Gaza, which for hundreds of activists who gathered Tuesday evening outside the Israeli consulate, does not absolve the murders of those aboard the Mavi Marmara.

Among the throng of protestors assembled outside the Turkish and Israeli consulates on Tuesday were a considerable number of Jews who, like the massive demonstrations around the world, condemned Israel and its violent attack on the humanitarian flotilla to Gaza Monday morning.

It was indeed strange to see several orthodox Jews with red Turkish crescent and star flags in their hands. But at an earlier rally outside the City Council offices, a speaker informed the crowd that a Holocaust survivor was among the activists on the Mavi Marmara, the ship on which nine human rights activists were killed.

One of the slogans that resonated up and down Second Avenue and 42nd Street near the Israeli consulate was “End the Blockade on Gaza” and “American Dollars Feeds Israel’s War Crimes.”

According to the Israeli government, the commandos were defending themselves after descending on the ship. The film footage that can be seen on YouTube is inconclusive on this point, and for the Israeli Defense Forces to show the collection of tools as weapons possessed by the activists was ludicrous.

The demonstrations lasted about two hours and included members of several activist groups, along with orthodox Jews in their traditional regalia. There were no arrests and no major incidents. Although, similar to the earlier rally outside the City Council offices, there were passersby who expressed differences with the protestors, insisting that the commandos were justified in their raid on the ship and were merely protecting themselves against the activists.

Israel Has Lost Its Mind And Her Soul As A Brutal Terrorist Regime

June 3, 2010: Matthew Rothschild / politicaltheatrics – June 3, 2010

Israel long ago lost its mind—and its soul. That’s what occupation does to the occupier. Now we are merely witnessing the violent spasms of the irrational.

You cannot attack a humanitarian relief ship in international waters and kill at least 10 people and get away with it. And Israel isn’t getting away with it. Its act of lawless aggression against the Gaza relief ship, which resulted in the deaths of at least 10 civilians, has sparked international outrage. Protests have erupted all over the world.

Some of the largest have been in Turkey, where most of the people on the flotilla were from. Turkey used to be Israel’s best ally in the Muslim world. You can forget about that now. Turkey’s Prime Minister Erdogan denounced the act as a “bloody massacre” and as “state terrorism.” And what did our President say? Virtually nothing, even though there were American citizens aboard the ship that Israel attacked.

In a written statement, Obama expressed “deep regret” at the loss of life, but he didn’t name Israel as the aggressor. In fact, his only specific mention of Israel was to say that it’s treating some of the wounded in Israeli hospitals. When armed forces from one of the world’s strongest militaries storm a relief ship at gunpoint, it is safe and accurate and morally necessary to name the aggressor. But somehow it slipped Obama’s mind.

Since the assault, the Israeli government and its apologists have been feverishly attempting to claim that the Israeli soldiers were the victims of aggression, not vice versa. Even if some of the relief activists resisted, that doesn’t constitute aggression—more like self-defense.

As Uri Avnery, leader of the Israeli peace group Gush Shalom, put it: “No sensible person in Israel or abroad will buy the collection of lies and pretexts with which those responsible are trying to justify themselves.” Avnery added: “A band of foolhardy, irresponsible and power-drunk persons decided on an action that was bound to result in people being killed and injured.”

Richard Falk, the UN Special Rapporteur for the Occupied Palestinian Territories, did not mince words. “”Israel is guilty of shocking behavior,” Falk said. “It is essential that those Israelis responsible for this lawless and murderous behavior, including political leaders who issued the orders, be held criminally accountable for their wrongful acts.”

With this assault, Israel may finally have lost any hope of finding its moral compass or restoring its reputation. The invasion of Gaza seventeen months ago was a war crime. The embargo of Gaza is a war crime—an act of collective punishment causing astronomical levels of poverty, malnutrition, and joblessness.

It was this embargo that the flotilla was trying to break. The ships were carrying 10,000 tons of medicine, food, and building materials, along with toys and chocolate for the children of Gaza.

“Rachel Corrie” Carries Foreward Gaza Freedom Flotilla Movement

June 3, 2010: Davi Barker / SF Muslim Examiner – June 3, 2010

Details about the Freedom Flotilla captured by Israeli warships in international waters continue to develop. Many in the international community are describing the incident as an act of piracy, others as an act of state terrorism. The six vessels that were seized were only the first wave of what is shaping up to be an ongoing Flotilla Movement intent on breaking through Israel’s naval blockade to deliver humanitarian aid to the suffering people of Gaza.

The MV Rachel Corrie, named for the American activist who was crushed by Israeli bulldozers in 2003, was originally intended to be the first ship to reach the coast of Gaza but unexpected mechanical problems forced her to stay behind.

Now, fully repaired, she is more determined than ever to deliver her humanitarian cargo to the shores of Gaza. The six Malaysian and five Irish peace activists aboard (Including 1976 Nobel Peace Prize winner Mairead Maguire) expressed grief for those killed aboard the Turkish Mavi Marmara when Israeli storm troopers descended from helicopters and opened fire on its passengers. They have asked the international community to continue putting pressure on Israel, and asked Israel to allow their safe passage to Gaza.

Now more are joining the Floitlla Movement. Three more ships departed from Malaysia on route to Palestine that were not part of the original fleet. There are also reports that Turkey intends to launch a second wave of support, possibly accompanied by Turkish naval escorts.

The MV Rachel Corrie is currently waiting in the Mediterranean for the passenger ship Challenger II also delayed by similar mechanical problems. The two ships will take aboard additional activists and journalists making a second attempt to cross the blockade. They are expected to arrive in Gaza sometime before Monday.

Israel has pledged to intercept the vessels if they do not change their course, or submit to an inspection, although the cargo was already inspected for contraband before leaving Ireland. According to an Israeli Naval Commander speaking to the Jerusalem Post, “Next time we’ll use more force.” Irish Prime Minister Brian Cowen has said that there will be “most serious consequences” if the Irish passengers on board are harmed . Relations between Ireland and Israel are already strained after it came to light that Israel had forged Irish passports in order to assassinate members of Hamas in Dubai last January.

Confirmed: US Citizen Shot 4 Times In Head By Israel Commandos

June 3, 2010: Hurriyet Daily News via Agence France-Presse – June 3, 2010

Eight Turks and a U.S. national of Turkish origin were killed in an Israeli raid on Gaza-bound aid ships, Anatolia news agency reported Thursday. The nationalities of the dead were determined after post-mortem examinations at a forensic institute in Istanbul, where the bodies were flown early Thursday, Anatolia said.

The nine activists who died in an Israeli raid on aid ships bound for Gaza were shot dead, the Anatolia news agency reported.

Forensic experts in Istanbul found bullet marks on the bodies of all the victims. The experts said the exact circumstances of the activists’ deaths would become clear in a balistics examination that would take about a month to complete.

An official from Humanitarian Relief Foundation, or İHH, NGO that organized the flotilla to Gaza, identified the U.S. citizen as 19-year-old Furkan Doğan, originally from the central Turkish town of Kayseri. Doğan had four bullet wounds to the head and one to the chest, Ömer Yağmur of İHH, told Anatolia.

The 19 wounded activists deported from Israel were also suffering from gun wounds, the chief doctor of the hospital in Ankara treating them said. “The patients generally have serious injuries to their chests, abdomens and limbs. What we have is mostly gun wounds,” Metin Doğan said in televised remarks.
